Over the summer, Chizuk Amuno Congregation’s Krieger Schechter Day School (KSDS) built a Makerspace, a designated area designed to encourage student creativity and out-of-the-box learning.

In the Makerspace, students create projects using materials, such as cardboard, clay, Legos and other art supplies. According to Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, KSDS head of school, Makerspaces can be found in many schools around the country and in public areas outside of schools.

During the planning phases for the KSDS Makerspace, faculty members including Amanda Levine, educational technology teacher and Makerspace project manager, visited local Makerspaces to see their layouts and how they are run.

Additionally, a committee of KSDS faculty members and parents formed to brainstorm ideas and design the Makerspace collaboratively.

Through the generosity of David and Sandy Abramoff, Krieger Schechter alumni parents, construction of the The Abramoff Makerspace and Collaboratory officially kicked off in July 2017. Abramoff’s vision came to life through the talents of Eric Michaelson, KSDS parent and a contractor with Blackdog Builders, who donated his time to build this special and creative space.

Rabbi Schwartz said he wanted the Makerspace to serve KSDS students in all grades and perhaps those enrolled in summer camps as well.

“We hope at some point in the near future, it will also be used by students of the Rosenbloom Religious School and Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center, the other two schools of Chizuk Amuno Congregation,” he says.
