More than 400 community and business leaders turned out on April 11 at Pikesville’s Suburban Club to hear David M. Rubenstein, co-founder and co-executive chairman of The Carlyle Group, speak at the Charles Baum Leadership Symposium.

The annual gathering is presented by The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

A Baltimore native, Rubenstein, 68, is a graduate of Baltimore City College, Duke University and the University of Chicago Law School. At the symposium, he spoke about his investment philosophy, the role of mentors in his life and how his philanthropic endeavors have inspired a generation of social entrepreneurs.

A Bethesda resident, Rubenstein is chairman of the boards of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also the vice chairman of the board of the Brookings Institution.

Founded in 1987, The Carlyle Group is a global private equity investment company based in Washington, D.C. The firm manages $174 billion from 31 offices around the world.

The Charles Baum Leadership Symposium is named in honor of the attorney and finance specialist who died in 2015, and commemorates his lifelong dedication to the Jewish community and his two decades of service to The Associated’s asset management program.
