We might be approaching the dreaded Dog Days, but that doesn’t mean we’re all out of things to do around Baltimore. August brings some of the biggest festivals of the summer, along with quirkier fare like EDM and podcasts. Here are our top 5 picks for the month.
Moonrise Festival — Revel in the convergence of Baltimore club and D.C. go-go on four stages. Heavy-hitting bass, live electronic acts, house music — it’s all here. You’ll also find art installations, a vendor village and more at this two-day dance party. Performers include Diplo, DJ Snake, Zeds Dead, Kaskade, Griz, Anna Lunoe and more than 50 others.

We Hate Movies — The We Hate Movies podcast features members of Private Cabin, a New York-based comedy arts collective. Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Eric Szyszka and Chris Cabin watch bad movies and share personal anecdotes or interesting trivia. For the Creative Alliance recording, the team watches the 1986 Sylvester Stallone film, “Cobra.” Does it get any worse than that? (Also see: RISK! at Creative Alliance Aug. 17)

Maryland State Fair — It’s a local tradition, it’s a rite of passage and it’s a showcase of some of the best food and fun Maryland has to offer. And it’s the one reason to look forward to the last few days of summer each year. This is your pass to eat as many deep-fried treats as you can stomach, ride as many carnival rides as you can handle and play as many midway games as you can afford. Of course, there’s also the 4-H exhibits (“Did you see the size of that zucchini?”), thoroughbred horse racing and an animal birthing center. Oh yeah, Smash Mouth and Jefferson Starship perform, too.

Maryland Renaissance Festival — Ladies in bodices, men in chain mail, food on sticks, steins filled with mead and lots of people trying to speak the King’s English. This is the winning combination that makes RenFest go round. Throw in some Shakespearean drama, jousting and much bawdy humor and you have a perfect day out in Crownsville.

Baltimore Art, Antique & Jewelry Show — If you just happen to have several extra Benjamins burning a hole in your wallet, this is the show for you. In the market for a Norman Rockwell? Need some heirloom jewels? Tired of polishing the old silver set? Or perhaps, you broke your one beloved ceramic vase and you desperately need a replacement? Shop for all those upscale goods, plus Americana memorabilia, tapestries, furniture and other high-end collectibles.
