For nearly four decades, Ron Abrams and the Abrams Travel team have provided tours and travel services to individuals, groups, synagogues and other organizations. The Burtonsville, Md.-based agency sends travelers around the globe, including to Israel, South Africa, Egypt, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Jmore recently spoke to Ron Abrams about the company.

Tell us about Abrams Travel.

Our connections to people and places mean travelers meet inspiring people and have memorable experiences. Touring with locals who have intimate knowledge of places and topics adds a level of excitement and interest and provides an exclusive ‘wow.’ We guide travelers to restaurants for local food and to ancient sites for history, but also link them to places in a unique way. Whether they’re sampling food in Borough Market in London and being immersed in a Picasso exhibit overlooking the Thames River, or speaking with artisans in a market in Havana, their encounters have meaning.

Abrams travelers visit the new museum at Ammunition Hill, a critical battle for Jerusalem’s reunification during the Six Day War, learning about it from the museum curator who lost his father in the combat. They drink wine and speak with vintners in Israel, Italy, France or South Africa. They eat local food, but they first shop for spices and ingredients in the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood of Cape Town and make their lunch with a woman who represented South Africa in an international cooking exhibition.

Why should travelers choose Abrams?

We care about every aspect of an experience. And we remain closely connected throughout their travels, identifying what they want out of a trip, planning the right itinerary and making sure it’s the trip they expected. We travel where we send our clients, revisiting places we’ve been and visiting new locations, to learn if these locations are still worthy of Abrams Travel. Recently, the Israel Ministry of Tourism recognized us for our contribution to Israeli tourism. My mother, Lila Abrams, founder of Abrams Travel, has been to Israel more than 100 times.

What’s the best part of running a travel company?

It’s a blessing to be able to make someone’s vision a reality. It’s the best feeling when people return from a trip, let us know how their tour fulfilled a dream and share that feeling with others. When we get a call like, ‘Our friends said their river cruise in Russia was amazing. Can you help us with a trip to Italy?,’ we know we’ve done our job.
