Lo Irah rah is Hebrew for do not fear. It’s also the name of a Jewish musical response to the COVID-19 pandemic led by Baltimorean David Lipsitz and featuring his friends and fellow vocalists, Jeremy Schonzeit, Ayton Sanders and Mordy Weinstein.
“I am extraordinarily proud to share this with you,” wrote Lipsitz, son of Gail and H. Allan Lipsitz, the late director of adult education at Beth El Congregation. “It has been the result of hard work across the country. From the heroic frontline workers to homebound seniors, remember that there is still hope and beauty in our world. Trust in the friendships in your life and community around you. Please feel free to share and spread this important message.”
In the video created by Adi Stein, the group sings the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “You’ll Never Walk Alone Again” in honor of medical staff and first-responders during pandemic, as well as others.
A 2005 graduate of the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, Lipsitz is a ba’al tefillah, or prayer reader, at Congregation Beth El in La Jolla, Calif. While attending the University of Maryland, College Park, he was a member of the Kol Ish a cappella singing group.
