Giant Food recently announced it will expand its selection of new and traditional kosher products at Baltimore area stores through an enhanced partnership with Kayco, the nation’s leading purveyor of kosher food, and the A&L Foods distributor.
The Landover-based Giant — which has 164 grocery stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C., with approximately 22,000 employees — will roll out its expanded kosher line prior to the High Holiday season, which starts on Sept. 18.
Promotional pricing for kosher items will start in late August, and most Giant stores will have special Rosh Hashanah end caps, or displays.
“Our goal is to bring the consumer a wide range of products, not just for the holidays but every day,” said Michael Schlicker, category manager of Giant Food’s specialty food program. “We have the selection and a promotional program that is unmatched in our marketplace.”
Said Harold Weiss, executive vice president of the Bayonne, N.J.-based Kayco: “Kayco’s robust synergy with Giant Food and A&L has elevated the shopping experience for Baltimore’s kosher consumers. Our extensive portfolio of recognized brands allows us to create strong programs that drive sales, which positions Giant as the one-stop choice for kosher in Baltimore.”
New products at Giant stores this High Holiday season will include Tuscanini sodas, the Israeli-produced Prigat clear juices, Zeta Oil from Italy, and a wide assortment of gluten-free snacks, pantry staples, frozen foods, refrigerated foods, drinks and culinary items.
Brooke Coyle, Giant’s category analyst, said the grocery chain’s decision to expand its kosher line was based on category growth, competitive pricing and consumer demand.
“Our Orthodox and traditional Jewish consumers are looking for quality, convenience and variety,” she said. “Kayco has the widest selection of the beloved favorites they grew up with, as well as an innovative line of trendy, gourmet-forward brands for today’s healthier lifestyles.”
Giant Food was founded in 1936 by Nehemiah Meir “N.M.” Cohen and Samuel Lehrman. Their first store was located at Georgia Avenue and Park Road in D.C.
Founded in 1948, the family-owned Kayco offers more than 5,000 kosher products from over 150 brands, including Manischewitz, Gefen, Tuscanini, Tirat Zvi, Elite, Kedem, Goodman’s, Yehuda and Lipton.
Based in Baltimore and Bensalem, Pa., A&L Foods has distributed dry, frozen and refrigerated retail and institutional specialty groceries in the mid-Atlantic region since 1938.
