Artist’s Beit Midrash: What Happened at Sinai?

A Beit Midrash is a place where Jews come together to study. An Artist’s Beit Midrash is an opportunity for people to explore Jewish sources, then, using artistic play and experimentation in a supportive environment, develop their own individual creative pieces out-of-the-text.
Our first Artist’s Beit Midrash will explore: What Happened at Sinai?
The Torah, Midrash and Jewish Literature are filled with imaginations: what happened at that magical moment when we were witnesses to the giving of Torah? The texts are mystical and profound. We will mine these beautiful narratives, examine their historical context, the thought process, the psychology and the images they evoke through our study of text. Participants will then further explore the story through their own imaginations. We will work collaboratively to support each other in creating our own art, music, writing, drama or other artistic creations that speak to the pinnacle moment that shaped Jewish peoplehood and infuse it with our own spirituality.
The works of our Beit Midrash, if participants are willing, will then be displayed at Har Sinai Congregation during the month of December.

Texts will be provided. Each “artist” will provide their own tools of choice.

Facilitated by Rabbi Linda Joseph, Senior Rabbi of Har Sinai Congregation.
