Though the temperatures may be soaring, there’s no mistaking that autumn’s in the air. Why is it that no matter how long it’s been since our student days, when September comes, many of us are seized by an urge to buy new shoes, update our wardrobes, cut and/or color our hair and get a makeover? Luckily, Jmore Beauty Guru Ariel Lewis is on hand to bring us up to date on the latest makeup trends. The headlines? It’s all about statement lip shades, neutral eyes and bold brows!

Reds, deep burgundies and brownish pinks are the lip shades of the moment. Ariel’s favorite burgundy? Urban Decay’s matte lipstick “1993.” This shade looks amazing on so many complexions!

Red lips are also hugely popular, but be mindful of choosing the right shade for your skin tone. Scared of a bold red lip? Skip the lipstick and try a sheer red lip gloss or balm instead. I love Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm in Red Dahlia. Ariel also has her own line of vegan lip gloss. The collection includes shades like “Jamie” or “Julieta” that bring a hint of red to your autumn look.

And take note:  When applying your makeup, choose one focal point — either lips or eyes.

For example, when using reds and other bold lip shades, keep eye makeup soft. Likewise, when going for a smoky eye, stick to a more neutral lip hue.

Easy on the Eyes

The best way to achieve neutral eyes is to limit the number of eyeshadows you use at one time. For example, apply one shade to your eyelids and no shadow to your eyelid crease. Or, apply a neutral brown to your crease and skip the eyelid shadow. Wondering what brand to choose? Ariel’s vote is for Bobbi Brown. She’s known for her soft and neutral tones.

Brow Business

Though eyebrows do have an important role — they frame your face — having stylish brows isn’t as complicated as it might seem. By keeping your brows well-groomed and filled in, you can achieve the look of lifted eyelids If you’re lucky enough to love the shape of your natural brows, a brow gel may be all your need to keep them looking their best. Brow Gels come with comb applicators which look like mascara wands. One sweep of gel over each brow is usually sufficient. If your brows need some TLC, skip the gel and try a pencil or a brush-on a powder brow product instead. Ariel’s picks include Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Benefit’s brow gels.
