Dynamic duo leads pediatric powerhouse
Kennedy Krieger Institute is pleased to welcome Bradley Schlaggar, M.D., Ph.D., as President and Chief Executive Officer, and Nancy Grasmick, Ed.D., as Chair of the Board of Directors. Internationally recognized for improving the lives of children and adolescents with disorders and injuries of the brain, spinal cord, and musculoskeletal system, Kennedy Krieger Institute has locations throughout the greater Baltimore, Maryland/Washington, D.C. region, and serves 24,000 individuals a year through inpatient and outpatient clinics, home and community services, and school-based programs.
In his new role, Dr. Schlaggar leads a team of more than 2,700 full and part-time staff members and faculty. Prior to joining Kennedy Krieger, Dr. Schlaggar served on the staff and faculty of Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine for 19 years, including four years as the division head of pediatric and developmental neurology, co-director of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center and neurologist-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
“My goal in the first six months is to learn as much as I can about the Institute’s clinical, research, and community programs, including our remarkable schools so that, in partnership with Dr. Grasmick, we can set the strategic plan for the next grand chapter,” says Dr. Schlaggar. “I’m certain that a major area of focus for us will be identifying ways to provide more services to children in Baltimore City, in the very neighborhoods where we are located. We’ll also strive to continue to extend the reach of Kennedy Krieger’s expertise throughout the Maryland/Washington D.C. metro region, the country, and beyond.”
Dr. Grasmick is begining her term as Chair of the Board of Directors after serving as Vice Chair for the past four years. She is the first woman to hold this position, and is also currently the co-director of Kennedy Krieger’s Center for Innovation and Leadership in Special Education, an innovative fellowship program that prepares teachers and administrators as special education leaders to optimize learning for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Known for her strong focus on student achievement, teacher quality, and public-school funding, Dr. Grasmick served as Maryland State Superintendent of Schools for 20 years.
“I hope to galvanize the Kennedy Krieger Institute Board around initiatives that expand the footprint of the Institute for purposes of funding, research, and the expansion of the special services offered to children, young adults, and families,” says Dr. Grasmick.
