At the start of the 2018-2019 school year, Krieger Schechter Day School welcomed Miriam Glaser to the middle school science department. Before joining the KSDS teaching team, Glaser taught at several other day schools, including Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville and The Park School of Baltimore.

In just a few short months, Glaser is already known by her students as a teacher who makes learning fun and interactive.

“I love creating lessons that involve hands-on activities and labs that the whole class gets to take part in,” Glaser explained. She includes many opportunities for labs and experiments in her lessons. Glaser also includes games and group work to enrich the learning experience.

Jacob B., a sixth grade KSDS student, particularly enjoys the experiments in Glaser’s class. “We have done several labs and experiments in class. My favorite was one where we examined whether water, lemon juice, or baking soda would dissolve in a tablespoon of salt,” explained Jacob. The students learned that lemon juice dissolves salt the fastest, and Glaser then discussed the reasons lemon juice is the most effective. Students who enjoy tactile activities are especially fans of her class.

With a background in biology and environmental sciences, Glaser embraced KSDS as the perfect opportunity to merge all of her interests and talents in one job. “The best part is that I get to teach my two favorite subjects this year: biology and geology. I love teaching about the human body and cells to the seventh grade and ecology to my sixth-graders by involving them in labs and tactile activities,” Glaser said.

Glaser also heads the Green School Club, which is working to secure KSDS a Maryland Green School Certification. The club is working to achieve its goal by adding more recycling bins throughout the school and encouraging teachers to add compost bins to their classrooms. Also, they are creating a movie to teach students about recycling, composting and living a “greener” life.

Glaser enjoys teaching and creates a fun atmosphere in which to learn. Between the students’ excitement and her passion and creativity, KSDS is lucky to welcome Glaser to our hallways.
