Caitlin Madera is the commercial and industrial energy efficiency grant program manager atthe Maryland Energy Administration (MEA). With members from the Public ServiceCommission, she represents MEA in the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, which includes multiple deployments in-state and nationally during emergency events.
Madera, who has a bachelor’s of science degreein environmental science and policy from the University of Maryland, notes thatthe mission of the MEA is to promoteaffordable, reliable and cleaner energy for the benefit of allMarylanders. To achieve that mission, MEA advises the governor and theGeneral Assembly on matters relating to energy policy, and administers grantand loan programs to encourage clean energy technologies in all sectors ofMaryland’s economy including residential, commercial, agricultural andtransportation.
“The benefits ofinstalling, say, higher efficiency LED bulbs throughout a manufacturing sitedoesn’t stop at a cheaper monthly utility bill,” says Madera. “That company ormanufacturer may be able to take that money saved and expand their products, advance their tools used or grow their workforce, all of which is beneficial tothe State of Maryland.”
Thisyear, the MEA also opened three solar-powered, community-based Resiliency Hubsin Baltimore City with the support of a $250,000 grant from the MEA. TheseResiliency Hubs provide an immediate resource and assist residents in therecovery from natural emergency events such as high heat, flooding, hurricanes, coastal storms, earthquakes and high wind conditions; manmade disasters such asfires, explosions or uprisings; or large-scale service outages. Each hubprovides access to electricity, fresh food, water, radios, two-way radios, charging stations, snow shovels, blowers, etc.
“What I enjoy about my work is my role in the unique intersection of the industrygoals of saving money and our goal to save energy,” says Madera.
